What is an Alberta vehicle inspection?

Alberta uses different checks for out-of-province registration vs used vehicles sold by licensed dealers. Licensed dealers must give you a Mechanical Fitness Assessment (MFA) before you buy. It is an assessment, not a simple pass/fail sticker. Out-of-province inspections follow a government process with tight repair and registry deadlines.

Why this confuses people

Calgarians often say “AMVIC inspection” when they mean different things: a dealer’s mechanical paperwork, a pre-purchase shop visit, or the province’s out-of-province safety inspection. Mixing those up leads to failed registry trips and surprise repair bills.

Out-of-province vehicle inspection

If a vehicle was registered outside Alberta, it generally must pass an inspection before Alberta plates are issued. Official steps are on Alberta.ca:

1. Buy a Request for Vehicle Inspection Form at an Alberta registry.
2. Take the vehicle and form to a licensed inspection facility. A journeyperson technician licensed for out-of-province work does the inspection (often around 2 hours).
3. Facilities set and post their own prices. Compare shops.
4. You get a signed Record of Inspection whether you pass or fail.
5. If you fail: complete repairs within 10 days of the original inspection, or you need a full inspection again.
6. If you pass: present the certificate to a registry agent within 14 days. Miss that window and you start over.

Vehicles must stay within OEM service limits to pass.
